DCI Nabs Suspected Fake Gold Dealer in Ksh4.5M Nairobi Scam

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a suspected fake gold merchant after a joint operation conducted by its officers and colleagues from the Kenya Police Service in Lang’ata Sub-County.

The suspect was arrested at Sultan Suites, Ngong View Estate, after being linked to a fraudulent gold deal involving a Pakistani national.

According to DCI, the foreigner had reported to the police that he was conned out of Ksh4,506,600 after being presented with 500 grams of counterfeit gold.

Investigations established that the suspect received the payment in cash before the buyer realised he had been duped.

Subsequent analysis revealed the gold to be fake, leading the complainant to lodge a report at Karen Police Station, which initiated a swift manhunt and arrest.

The DCI stated that a search in the suspect’s office uncovered a cache including ten suspected fake gold bars, smelting machines, a MacBook Pro, business cards, a weighing machine, two plastic boxes containing sand, and a mining certificate under Chawanda Minerals.

The authority also recovered several assorted files and documents believed to be linked to the fraudulent scheme.

The suspect is still in custody as detectives wrap up investigations, with plans to charge him in court over fraud-related offences.
