Ex-Senator Orwoba Barred from Parliament, Protests ‘Illegal’ Replacement

Former nominated senator Gloria Orwoba was blocked from entering the Parliament buildings on Wednesday, August 27.

Speaking outside the premises, the ex-senator claimed that her replacement’s participation in parliamentary business is illegal and undermines the current impeachment process.

She accused Senate leadership of allowing illegality to persist by permitting Consolata Wabwire, nominated to replace her, to participate in Senate proceedings despite ongoing legal challenges.

According to her, Wabwire’s presence in the Senate provides grounds for appealing any outcome from the current impeachment proceedings against Kericho Governor Eric Mutai.

Orwoba moreover called on the people of Kericho to note what she termed an illegal process, warning them that the current Senate proceedings were shortchanging them.

This development comes just days after the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal ruled in Orwoba’s favor, ordering the United Democratic Alliance to overturn all disciplinary measures against her.

It ruled that UDA’s disciplinary process against Orwoba was flawed, both legally and procedurally, and deprived her of a fair hearing.

The dispute traces back to UDA’s May decision to expel Orwoba from the party after a disciplinary sitting.

Announcing the decision, UDA SG Hassan Omar stated that the NEC had backed the disciplinary panel’s ruling and nominated Consolata Wabwire Wakwabubi of Kimilili as Orwoba’s successor.
