Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has condemned the shooting of an unarmed hawker, Boniface Kariuki, by a police officer in Moi Avenue, Nairobi, on Tuesday, June 17.
In a statement on June 18, 2025, the governor termed the shooting incident as an act that violates the principles of a democratic society.
He therefore called for a thorough and independent investigation and stressed that the officer involved must be held fully accountable.
He also condemned the surge of violence, looting and destruction that we witnessed during the protests.

The Nairobi Governor urged young people not to fall prey to manipulation by political operatives or criminal elements seeking to exploit demonstrations for personal or political gain.
Sakaja called on the National Police Service (NPS) to act firmly but fairly and ensure that both those responsible for Boniface Kariuki’s shooting and the perpetrators of property damage are brought to justice.
The governor further appealed to Kenyans to use democratic institutions like Parliament and the Judiciary to air their grievances and seek reform instead of violence.
