Bayern Munich fans paid tribute to Thomas Müller before, during, and after his last home game for the club on Saturday.
“We all knew this moment would come, and so did I,” Müller told Bayern supporters following a 2-0 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach. “I’m very happy that we brought this trophy back to Munich!”
Bayern had clinched the Bundesliga title the previous weekend, but the team had to wait until after Saturday’s match for the trophy presentation. The celebrations focused on Müller, who was playing in his 750th game for the club.
Before the match, supporters positioned behind one of the goals displayed a massive red and white tifo featuring pictures of Müller celebrating and lifting trophies.
The tifo also included his name in large letters, accompanied by a banner reading;
“For 25 years, everything for our colors!”
Club officials honored the 35-year-old Müller by presenting him with a picture showcasing all the trophies he has won with Bayern.
“Let us play!” he exclaimed as he brought the picture and a bouquet of flowers to the sideline.
Müller made his 502nd Bundesliga appearance, playing until the 84th minute before departing to loud applause from the crowd. He embraced his teammates as he left the field and blew kisses while waving to the fans. Bayern substitutes formed a guard of honor for him.
