Ulinzi Starlets Thwart Kibera Soccer Hopes of Winning Women Title

Ulinzi Starlets thwarted Kibera Soccer Women FC’s hopes of pursuing the FKF Women’s Premier League title, securing a 1-0 victory despite missing a late penalty.

As title contenders, Kibera Soccer Women entered the match under pressure to win and challenge last season’s champions, Kenya Police Bullets FC, for the title.

The intense match began amidst drizzling rain, with Kibera showcasing their tactical interplay and demonstrating their determination. In the 24th minute, Elizabeth Akinyi nearly scored for Kibera from a corner kick, but her effort hit the crossbar and bounced out.

Following the restart, Ulinzi Starlets had an opportunity to capitalize on Kibera’s missed chance. However, Shakava squandered an open shot in the 30th minute. She had another chance to redeem herself in the 39th minute but failed to convert, leaving the first half scoreless.

The Ulinzi Starlets’ halftime adjustments paid off immediately after the break. In the 46th minute, Fasila Adhiambo took advantage of a goalkeeper mistake by Vivian Shiyonzo and skillfully looped the ball into the net, giving Ulinzi the lead.

Joy Kinglady came close to doubling Ulinzi’s advantage after a one-two play with Siliya Rasoha, but a lack of composure cost her the goal.

In the 65th minute, Lilian Mmboga nearly equalized for Kibera with a header that just missed the target. Faith Mboya thought she had found the back of the net in the 68th minute, raising the Kibera bench in celebration, only for the lineswoman to signal an offside, nullifying the goal.

With just over 15 minutes remaining and Kibera under pressure, substitute Amina Nyakoa fouled Lucy Nato in the penalty area. Center referee Christine promptly awarded a penalty. Joy Kinglady stepped up, looking to redeem herself, but unfortunately, she missed the target.

Ulinzi then focused on defending their 1-0 lead until the final whistle, leapfrogging Kibera to take second place with 39 points, while Kibera dropped to third with 38 points.
