TUK Shuts Down Closure Rumors, Memo Declared Fake

The Technical University of Kenya (TUK) has dismissed allegations that the Institution has been closed for three months after it was declared insolvent.

The Institution stated that the document which has circulated on social media informing the public that the Institution had been closed was fake.

“Treat this document circulated online as FAKE. The University has not been closed. Classes and normal operations are on”, part of the statement read.

The fake statement claimed that the University had notified its staff, students and stakeholders that normal operations would cease from Monday, April 21, due to the university’s closure.

“The University will remain closed for three months, or until a satisfactory agreement has been reached on the way forward”, the statement added.

According to the document, the statement was allegedly issued by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Benedict Mutua, prohibiting students and staff from accessing the premises.

This followed a declaration by the Parliamentary Committee on Education and Administration on Thursday which declared the University insolvent due to a Ksh12billion debt crisis.

The Institution was unable to meet salary obligations because it had overstretched its employment capabilities and hired more staff than necessary.
