Arsenal’s hopes of winning the Premier League title suffered a significant setback as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Everton at Goodison Park.
The first 30 minutes of the match were tense and stop-start, but Arsenal broke the deadlock in the 34th minute with their first shot on target. Leandro Trossard finished coolly on the counterattack after receiving a pass from Raheem Sterling. The goal came as a result of a mistake by Everton when Idrissa Gueye mistimed a header, allowing Sterling to take possession and set up Trossard for the finish.
Trossard nearly doubled his tally just before halftime, but his toe-poked effort was scrambled away by Jordan Pickford, and Declan Rice’s follow-up shot was blocked.
Everton equalized shortly after the start of the second half when they were awarded a penalty. Myles Lewis-Skelly brought down Jack Harrison in the box, and Iliman Ndiaye calmly converted the spot-kick.
After a lackluster first half, the Toffees were reinvigorated, with Abdoulaye Doucoure forcing David Raya into a sharp save. On the other end, Declan Rice’s powerful free-kick was parried away by England teammate Pickford.
Arsenal struggled to create clear chances due to the lack of fluidity in their play. The introduction of star player Bukayo Saka as a second-half substitute failed to bring the needed attacking spark. Saka’s free-kick attempt hit the wall, mirroring Arsenal’s diminishing title hopes.
Neither team could find a winning goal, and Everton’s draw provided a boost to local rivals Liverpool. The result means that Liverpool now needs only 11 points from their remaining eight fixtures—starting with a match against Fulham on Sunday—to secure the title.
