Tough End to What was a Promising Season for Diego Simeone

Atletico Madrid’s head coach, Diego Simeone, expressed pride in his team’s performance during the Copa del Rey semi-final second leg against Barcelona, despite a 1-0 defeat on Wednesday, which resulted in a 5-4 loss on aggregate.

Following being eliminated from the Champions League by Real Madrid, Atletico has suffered a six-match winless streak that has caused them to fall nine points behind the leaders in the LaLiga title race.

However, Simeone stated he remains content with the team’s overall performance. Atletico seem to be out of contesting in any of the competitions.

“The team has competed very well so far, both in the Champions League and in the cup,” he said. “We are having a solid season in LaLiga, and we will continue to approach each match one at a time. We are focused on improving and getting closer to the teams above us, while also accepting our current situation.”

Simeone emphasized his commitment to maintaining focus on their upcoming matches, particularly the next game against Sevilla.

“Despite the recent disappointments, it’s important to keep perspective,” he said. “In football, there are good moments and challenging ones. There are times when you control the game and times when you control the opponent. Throughout the season, managing these phases—good, average, and bad—is crucial. We hope to finish each game in the best way possible.”

He added, “We didn’t play well today, but that’s nothing to regret. There are no criticisms or complaints, as the competitive spirit and desire of the players were evident. Everyone is giving their all, and I hope to see this continue.”

Atletico Madrid’s next match is away against Sevilla on Sunday.
