The Law Society of Kenya (LSK), alongside the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC), reprimanded the killing of a 17-year-old girl who refused a forced marriage to a 55-year-old man.
Reports indicate that the teen known as Gaal Adan Abdi had left several voice notes for her mother before her untimely death.
In the voice note, she mentioned that she was undergoing physical abuse daily from both her husband and his relatives revealing that she did not want to be in the marriage and would instead go back to the refugee camp where she had previously been living.
Moments before she passed away, she had told her mother that her phone was being taken away, and later on, she was contacted and told that she wouldn’t be able to see her daughter anymore. Hardly did she know that her daughter was killed and body burnt.
Following the report by NTV, LSK President Faith Odhiambo called for immediate justice for those involved in the heinous act.
“Another day, another femicide case, another innocent life lost. Have we lost our humanity? Has free will lost its meaning and value in society? Has our Constitution ceased being a manifestation of our national moral fabric? No person, no woman, should have to suffer such an untimely death over the discernment and choice,” she stated.
Odhiambo now wants security agencies to take immediate action and apprehend those involved in the act.
