Benni McCarthy; Qualifying for the World Cup Will be Hard but Not Impossible

Harambee Stars is set to host Gabon in a World Cup Qualifier match at the Nyayo Stadium at 4 PM. In an interview during their last training session, coach Benni McCarthy, goalkeeper Ian Otieno, and forward William Lenkupae shared their thoughts on the upcoming match.

After the draw away against The Gambia, which ended on a positive note, Benni McCarthy emphasized that his technical team will focus on building from that performance.

“We will pick up from where we left off because I believe that in the game against The Gambia, we finished strong,” he stated.

McCarthy expressed his desire to showcase a team that is ready to fight for every second of the ninety minutes. He believes that Kenya has a chance of qualifying for the World Cup, though he acknowledges that it will be a tough journey.

“Yes, we do. Every team in this group, including Gabon, Kenya, Ivory Coast, Burundi, and The Gambia, has a chance. There is also the possibility of qualifying for the second spot. We need to start tomorrow with three points to help us catch up. It will be hard, but it is not impossible.”

Goalkeeper Ian Otieno mentioned how nice it is to finally be playing at home and urged fans for their support.

“Preparation is going well. Everybody is ready for tomorrow. We are equally happy to be playing at home after being away for so long. We look forward to the support of the fans, and we are going to give our best,” he said.

William Lenkupae, who is based in Australia, shared his long-standing desire to play for Harambee Stars and expressed his feelings about being included in the team.

“I have always been in touch with these players. I love this country and have a connection with it, so I always knew this would be a great team. I am grateful to be part of it,” he shared.
