Two Men Face 70 Years in Jail for Robbery and Murder in Mombasa

Two middle-aged men have been sentenced to 70 years in prison after being found guilty of robbery with violence.

The two accused, identified as Julius Gitonga and Joseph Mukabana, were given 40-year sentence and 30-year sentence respectively.

The ruling was delivered by Shanzu Senior Principal Magistrate Yusuf Abdalla Shikanda on Friday, 7 2025.

The magistrate found them guilty of three counts of robbery with violence, whereas Gitonga was also convicted of possessing a firearm and ammunition without a valid certificate.

“The first convict (Gitonga) shall serve additional sentences for robbery as he was responsible for shooting and killing the deceased in cold blood”, Shikanda ruled.

The two individuals allegedly broke into Ken Kamto’s house in Nyali in 2018, fatally shooting him and stealing items of unspecified value.

“No punishment can restore the life of the deceased. However, the court must deliver a clear message that crime does not pay. After considering all the relevant factors, including the Probation Officer’s recommendation, I agree that a non-custodial sentence is not viable,” Shikanda added.
