Galatasaray Accuse Jose Mourinho ‘Racist’ Remarks after a Goalless Draw in the Istanbul Derby

The aftermath of the intense Istanbul derby between Galatasaray and Fenerbahce has taken a serious turn, as Galatasaray has accused Fenerbahce’s manager, Jose Mourinho, of making racist comments.

Galatasaray announced their intention to file formal complaints with UEFA and FIFA, asserting that Mourinho’s remarks were inappropriate.

The controversy began when Mourinho claimed during his post-match press conference that the Galatasaray bench had pressured the referee to show a card to Fenerbahce defender Yusuf Akcicek early in the game. Prior to the match, he had welcomed the decision to use a foreign official, having previously described the environment in Turkey as “toxic.”

Mourinho then made a questionable comment, stating,

“I have to thank the referee because, in that situation, everyone on the other bench was jumping like monkeys.”

These remarks have sparked outrage at Galatasaray, who labeled them racist and unacceptable. The Turkish club is now calling for strong action from football’s governing bodies.

Galatasaray’s manager, Okan Buruk, also reacted strongly, mocking Mourinho during his own press conference.

Buruk said, “The Crying One’s speech was a bit long. You know, he’s famous for crying. He cried for a long time here. He cried inside, went to the referee’s room, and cried there, too. Let him keep crying.”

The goalless draw at Rams Park allowed Galatasaray to maintain their six-point lead at the top of the Super Lig, while Fenerbahce now faces a challenging path in the title race.

However, the match result has been overshadowed by the controversy surrounding Mourinho’s comments, which have intensified the already growing tension between the two clubs.

Mourinho, 62, a two-time Champions League winner, was appointed Fenerbahce manager last summer and was previously banned and fined earlier this season for criticizing refereeing standards in Turkey.
