Detained Ugandan Opposition Leader Besigye Hospitalized Amid Hunger Strike

Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye has been rushed to the hospital.

He was rushed to a private clinic on Sunday 11th February 2025 after launching alleged hunger strike in prison for illegal detention.

His health slowly deteriorated as was evidenced in his last court trial where he looked frail and sickly, his eyes were hollow, and cheeks fallen and skin stretched with a mixture of anxiety and uncertainty.

His lawyers led by Lukwago had proposed for the court proceedings to discontinue arguing that if it continued, it would amount to violation of human rights.

Besigye had been detained since November 2024 after being reportedly abducted in Nairobi and charged with illegal possession of firearms and treachery.

Dr. Baryomunsi of Uganda posted on his X account confirming that Besigye was indeed hospitalized and was being taken care of by his personal doctors.

“I have just visited Col Dr Kizza Besigye at Luzira prison in the presence of his personal doctors. I have given him counsel and asked him to resume taking food as the government fast tracks the transfer of his case from the court martial to a civil court” he wrote.
