Six lions belonging to the same pride at the Oleisukut Conservancy in the Maasai Mara were treated for poisoning, just days after the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) marked World Tourism Day on September 27 by offering free entry to national parks.
In a statement issued on Monday morning, KWS indicated that the lions were observed exhibiting symptoms of poisoning, prompting veterinary teams to administer treatment and later move them for closer monitoring.
Footage and images obtained by Kenyans.co.ke showed the lions appearing lethargic in the wild, sparking concern about their condition.

Following intervention, four of the lions have made a full recovery, while two are still being closely monitored.
“Six lions in Oleisukut Conservancy – Maasai Mara, were reported showing signs of poisoning. Our veterinary team responded swiftly, administering emergency treatment, stabilising the pride, and relocating them to safety. Thankfully, all six survived – four have fully recovered while two remain under close monitoring. Kenya Wildlife Service remains steadfast in its mandate to conserve and protect Kenyaβs iconic species,” the statement read.
The cause of the poisoning is yet to be determined, although investigations are ongoing, as well as the continuous monitoring of the pride.
