Police in Mtito Andei have apprehended three suspects believed to be behind a violent robbery attempt along the Mombasa–Nairobi highway that resulted in the death of one of their accomplices.
The dramatic incident unfolded on May 6, 2026, near Mutomo area, when a gang on a motorcycle staged a fake roadside emergency to stop a transit driver.
The suspects then tried to carjack his Subaru Impreza at gunpoint. However, their plan went horribly wrong when the firearm discharged during a struggle with the driver, fatally shooting one of the attackers, identified as Gift Musau.

His partners in crime fled the scene on the motorcycle, abandoning their dead colleague.
For nearly three months, detectives worked tirelessly on the case.
Their persistence finally paid off on Friday, August 21, 2026, when a team from Mtito Andei tracked down and arrested two suspects in Kinyambu. They were identified as Alex Mueti Kasina and Stephen Kalungo Joel.
The following day, officers arrested a third suspect, Jamlick Muli Muasa, also known as Star, at his shop in Kinyambu.
A search of his premises uncovered two mobile phones, while a raid on his residence in Maikuu, Kinyambu, revealed several identity cards bearing different names and multiple driving licences under different identities, among other items.
The breakthrough comes just months after detectives warned drivers transporting transit vehicles about the growing threat of such attacks along the busy highway.
The three suspects are scheduled to appear in court on Monday, August 24, 2026, facing charges including murder, attempted robbery with violence, and unlawful possession of ammunition, as investigations continue.
