3 Charged After Allegedly Using Fake KCSE, Degree Certificates

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has intensified its crackdown on the use of fake academic certificates after arresting three officials accused of using forged documents to secure employment in public institutions.

The suspects, Joshua Attuah Omia and Thomas Mbonje Bandari of Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company Limited, and Silas Musasa Masambu of Kaimosi Friends University, are facing charges linked to forgery and fraudulent acquisition of public funds.

According to investigations by the Commission, Omia and Bandari allegedly forged Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificates and presented them as authentic documents issued by the Kenya National Examinations Council to obtain employment at the water company.

Following completion of investigations, the files were forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who approved charges including forgery, uttering false documents, and fraudulent acquisition of public property.

The two are accused of unlawfully receiving salaries amounting to KSh5.9 million and KSh9.4 million respectively.

The suspects were arrested on May 11, 2026, and later arraigned before the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court, where they denied the charges.

They were released on a cash bail of KSh300,000 each or an alternative bond of KSh1 million pending further directions on May 26.

In a separate case, Masambu allegedly used forged diploma and degree certificates to secure employment at Kaimosi Friends University.

He was arrested in Vihiga County and is expected to appear before the Kakamega Law Courts on May 13, 2026.
