Police in Busia have apprehended two suspected gang members after recovering 180 National Identification Cards bearing different names during an operation targeting criminal networks in Teso South near the Uganda border.
The DCI revealed in a statement that the detectives seized a tear gas canister, metal bars believed to be used for housebreaking, military boots, and five mobile phones.
The National Identification Cards were reportedly recovered during a search of one of the suspects’ residences after the two were arrested in a targeted operation.
Investigators are now probing how the 180 IDs came into the suspects’ possession and whether the documents were being used or intended for use in criminal activities.
“The extensive search revealed 180 National Identification Cards bearing different names, prompting investigators to probe how the vital documents came into the suspectβs possession and whether they were being used, or intended for use, in criminal activities,β DCI stated.
Among the other items recovered were a heavy metal rod and eight metal bars suspected to have been used in breaking into houses.
Detectives also seized two pairs of military boots and a tear gas canister, with all the recovered items secured as exhibits as investigations continue.
The two suspects are curry being held in custody as detectives process the case ahead of their arraignment, while investigators pursue additional leads.
