Sunday’s school bus accident along the Bomet-Kaplong Highway has once again raised troubling questions about road safety on one of Kenya’s most dangerous stretches.
The bus, carrying students returning from the annual music festival in Nairobi, overturned in the evening of August 2, leaving six learners injured.
The vehicle, which came to rest on its side, blocked its own doors, forcing a harrowing evacuation through the emergency exit.

Bystanders who arrived at the scene in the aftermath played a crucial role in assisting the trapped students.
Six casualties were rushed to Kaplong Mission Hospital, where they are receiving treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.
Fortunately, no fatalities have been recorded, and no other vehicle was involved in the single-vehicle crash.
However, the exact cause remains a mystery, with authorities yet to issue a statement on what triggered the loss of control.
The Bomet-Kaplong Highway has long been notorious for accidents, with the most recent tragedy occurring in May, when a pickup and a motorbike collided at Meja-Chepkosa, resulting in casualties.
This latest incident serves as a sobering reminder of the vulnerabilities students face when travelling for school events.
With the holiday season, safety advocates are once again calling for stricter regulations on school transport and heightened vigilance along accident-prone corridors.
