Safaricom PLC has appointed Mariam Cassim and Matimba Mbungela as Non-Executive Directors to its Board, effective August 13, subject to regulatory approvals.
The telecommunications company announced the changes in a statement issued on Thursday, August 13, alongside the departure of James Ludlow and Dr. (Eng.) John Kipngetich Mosonik, who resigned from their positions as Non-Executive Directors with effect from the same date.
Cassim joins the Safaricom Board with extensive experience in corporate finance, deal structuring, mergers and acquisitions, debt structuring, commercial management and executive leadership.

She has held senior positions at Vodacom Group since 2017 and brings expertise in innovation, business disruption and new business development. Her experience includes developing commercially sustainable solutions aimed at creating value for businesses and society.
Cassim is a Chartered Accountant and holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business, where she graduated cum laude.
Mbungela, meanwhile, is the Chief Officer for Human Resources at Vodacom Group Limited, a position he has held since 2014.
He previously served as Managing Executive for Human Resources at Vodacom/Vodafone Group from 2003, where he held various senior positions within the human resources function.
His career also includes a three-year secondment to Vodafone, where he served as Regional Head of Organisational Effectiveness and Change and Regional Head of Talent for Africa, Middle East and Asia Pacific.
Before that assignment, Mbungela was responsible for talent management at Vodacom for six years and played a role in integrating the company’s talent strategy with Vodafone’s global strategy.
He has also held senior human resources positions at multinational companies including BMW South Africa and Unilever.
Mbungela represents the Vodacom Employees Trust, known as Siyanda, on the YeboYethu Board and serves as a Non-Executive Director of Vodacom Tanzania Plc, Vodacom Mozambique and Vodacom Lesotho.
He has also served on the Unisa Graduate School of Business Leadership Advisory Board since June 1, 2020.
Mbungela holds a Bachelor of Administration degree from the University of Venda, an MBA in Strategy and Human Resources from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and a Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resources from the University of Cape Town.
