The National Police Service has confirmed the arrest of at least 37 suspected gang members in the aftermath of violence.
The incident occurred during the Linda Mwananchi rally in Homa Bay County on Sunday, August 16, 2026.
In a statement on Monday, August 17, the service confirmed intensified operations to identify and apprehend individuals linked to the violence that left two dead and scores injured.
According to the NPS, the suspects were found in possession of various crude weapons, including machetes, ropes, metal rods, knives, rungus, batons and torches.
“A total of 37 suspected gang members have been arrested and were found in possession of various crude weapons, including machetes, ropes, metal rods, knives, rungus, batons and torches. The suspects. will be processed accordingly and must face the full force of the law,” the statement read.
Additionally, the police revealed they were pursuing an individual believed to be among the masterminds behind the gang violence, who remains at large.
NPS further issued a warning to political actors on the timing of rallies, reiterating that public gatherings must be conducted between 6.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m.
“Additionally, all political actors intending to organise public rallies are reminded that such gatherings must be conducted within the prescribed hours of 6.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. The requisite notification must also be given to the police to facilitate adequate security planning and deployment,” it added.
