“Coming soon, parcel delivery by rail. We’re excited to introduce the Parcel Service, offering same-day delivery between Nairobi and Mombasa, fast, safe, and right on track,” Kenya Railways stated.
Kenya Railways is set to provide more details on the launch date of its new parcel delivery service, which is expected to boost revenue for the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
Traditionally known for passenger travel between Nairobi and Mombasa and freight transport from Mombasa to Naivasha, the railway will now offer same-day parcel deliveries along the busy corridor.
Currently, parcels sent between the two cities are delivered the following day, depending on posting time.
The SGR has already transformed travel, cutting commuting time between Nairobi and Mombasa to under six hours.
President Ruto recently inaugurated the extension of the SGR from Naivasha to Kisumu and onward to Malaba at the Kenya-Uganda border.
He highlighted that the expansion would provide passengers travelling to Western Kenya with an alternative mode of transport while helping to reduce traffic congestion along the Nairobi–Nakuru–Mau Summit highway, especially during peak travel seasons.
The railway will also carry cargo containers from Mombasa to Malaba.
Speaking at the launch, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni revealed plans to extend the line from Malaba to Kampala, further strengthening regional connectivity.
