The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has begun drainage improvement works along major roads in Nairobi as part of preparations ahead of the expected El Niño rains.
According to KeNHA, the works began along the James Gichuru Junction-JKIA Corridor, where KeNHA is seeking to address stormwater management challenges affecting the highway drainage system.
The authority has said the government needs to prepare early to prevent flooding that has caused loss of lives, displacement of people and led to severe damage to properties over the years when it rained heavily.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is set to undertake drainage improvement works across the network ahead of the expected El Niño rains. Such improvements have begun in earnest along the James Gichuru Road Junction – JKIA A8/B10 Corridor to address stormwater management challenges affecting the highway drainage system,” KeNHA stated.
This forms part of the ongoing capacity enhancement, landscaping and beautification project along the corridor.
The works are intended to improve the capacity of the drainage system and minimise the impact of stormwater on the highway infrastructure as the country prepares for increased rainfall.
“The works, being undertaken as part of the ongoing capacity enhancement, landscaping, and beautification project, will improve stormwater management, protect road infrastructure, and support safe, efficient, and sustainable road transport,” the authority added.
