Instagram Set to Launch Reels as Separate App

Instagram is considering launching a standalone app for its short-form video feature and reels.

Meta-owned company Chief Adam Mosseri reported the new change on Wednesday, 27th February 2025.

According to reports, the Instagram app wants to take advantage of TikTok’s uncertain status in the United States, aiming to introduce a similar video-scrolling experience.

In early January, Meta introduced a new video editing app called Edits, which appeared to target CapCut users. Now, the app is targeting rival TikTok amid its ban challenge in the United States.

As soon as President Donald Trump took his oath of office, he granted TikTok a 75-day extension to comply with a law that was signed by former President Joe Biden.

The Biden administration argued that TikTok, which has over 170 million US users, could be used by China as a tool for spying and political manipulation.

The administration wanted TikTok to sell the app or face a ban in the US.

This is not the first time that Meta has competed with the popular app TikTok.

In 2018, Meta launched a standalone app called Lasso, which had almost similar features as TikTok, but it was later shut down.
