The Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, has ordered investigations into the violent arrest of a physically challenged protester in Nakuru after a viral video of the incident sparked public outrage.
In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) condemned the ‘unprofessional conduct by officers involved in the arrest’ saying the actions captured on video appeared to violate the Service’s Standard Operating Procedures.
“The Service condemns all forms of excessive force or breaches of established procedures. We remain committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and respect for human rights,” read the police statement.
According to the police reports, preliminary reports indicate that the incident occurred on Thursday, June 25, in Nakuru during the nationwide commemoration of the 2024 Anti-Finance Bill victims.
The IG has now directed the Internal Affairs Unit within the police service to conduct a thorough, professional, and impartial investigation and submit its findings within seven days.
“The Inspector General has directed the Internal Affairs Unit to conduct a thorough, professional, and impartial investigation into the matter within seven days. Appropriate action will be taken based on the findings,” the statement added.
This comes after the police service came under sharp criticism over footage showing officers violently arresting a disabled man who relies on crutches for movement.
In the video shared online, the man attempting to cross a road with the assistance of another individual after police mounted a barricade during the demonstrations.
Moments later, a police Land Cruiser carrying more than 10 armed officers arrives at high speed before the officers, armed with firearms, batons and tear gas launchers, jump out and rush towards the pair.
The driver is seen leading the chase, with the other officers following closely behind.
The man assisting the disabled protester manages to escape, leaving him behind as officers converge on him.
