Josh Kerr thrilled the home crowd after storming to victory in the men’s mile final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on Saturday night, while Kenya’s Timothy Cheruiyot settled for a bronze medal in a fiercely contested race at Hampden Park.
Kerr crossed the finish line in 3:54.12, securing gold in front of thousands of jubilant Scottish fans. Australia’s Cameron Myers finished second to claim silver, while former world champion Timothy Cheruiyot completed the podium places with bronze.
The race marked the return of the men’s mile to the Commonwealth Games programme for the first time in six decades, adding extra significance to an event that attracted some of the world’s best middle-distance runners.
Competing in front of his home supporters, Kerr controlled the pace in the closing stages before producing a powerful finish to pull away from his rivals and secure one of the biggest victories of his career.
For Cheruiyot, the bronze medal represented another important achievement in his decorated career.
The Kenyan star, who has won numerous international titles, fought hard throughout the race but was unable to match Kerr’s late acceleration.
Australia’s Myers also impressed, maintaining his pace to secure silver and deny Kenya a place in the top two positions.
