The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has apprehended four people suspected of involvement in a counterfeit money syndicate in Makueni County,.
During the operation, the authorities recovered the fake currency worth Ksh4.378 million in the operation.
In a statement on Friday, August 28, 2026, the DCI explained that the operation was carried out by officers attached to Mtito Andei Police Station following intelligence that led them to the suspected network.
“A counterfeit syndicate dealing in fake banknotes has been dismantled in Makueni County after officers from Mtito Andei Police Station executed a swift, intelligence-led crackdown, seizing counterfeit currency with a face value of KSh 4,378,000,” the statement read.
According to the DCI, the first two suspects, a 57-year-old and a 59-year-old, were arrested in Kambu Township, where police recovered Ksh4 million in counterfeit Ksh1,000 notes during the operation.
Investigators further extended the operation to Mtito Andei Township as they pursued further leads in the suspected syndicate.
Officers stopped a heavy-duty truck, which was travelling from Mombasa to Naivasha while carrying fertiliser.
A search of the vehicle uncovered another batch of counterfeit Ksh1,000 notes valued at Ksh378,000.
The four suspects are currently in the police station awaiting arraignment in court.
The seized currency and other exhibits have been placed at Mtito Andei Police Station as detectives pursue additional leads.
