Legendary Radio Journalist Leornard Mambo Mbotela Dies Aged 85 in Nairobi, Family Confirms

Veteran broadcaster Leonard Mambo Mbotela has passed away aged 85.

According to reports, Mbotela had been sickly and was being treated at a city hospital where he passed away at 9:30 am in the morning on Friday 7th February 2025.

The deceased is known for his popular TV show ‘Jee huu ni Ungwana’.

The show which was launched in 1966 aired on KBC radio for over five decades which became one of the longest running programs in Kenyan Broadcasting history.

The show addressed issues of social etiquette and manners.

Mbotela’s unique passion for broadcasting was discovered in his early life in school as he used to compile news from newspaper clippings and read them to his classmates.

This led him to a trainee at the standards newspaper in Nakuru.

This was when he transitioned to the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation which marked the beginning of his legendary broadcasting career.

Throughout his career, he was recognized for his contribution towards journalism and broadcasting.

He received several awards including Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya in 1992.
