Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale’s nephew is among the three confirmed dead in Shinyalu goldmine tragedy.
This was confirmed by the senator on his X account on Tuesday 4th February 2024.
Khalwale stated that 19 people had been rescued and 3 people feared dead including his nephew Chui.
I am currently at Machilisi village in Shinyalu Constituency, where a goldmine collapsed last night trapping 22 men. So far, 19 rescued 3 feared dead, including Sasita Chui, my nephew.
The Kakamega Senator stated.
According to reports, the walls of the mineshaft collapsed at around 6 pm on Monday 3rd February 2025 leaving 20 miners who were inside excavating.
The police confirmed that those rescued had no injuries and assured that the search and rescue operations were still ongoing.
In the latest development provided by Senator Khalwale, 19 people injured but 3 people feared dead including his nephew.
The senator claimed that the tragedy was caused by corrupt individuals who smuggles the gold.
He therefore urged CS for mining Hassan Joho to visit Kakamega and access illegal mining that is ruining the economy in the county.
He also urged Joho to help them recover Ksh 1 billion that is lost to the corrupt individuals.
All we are saying is that Ksh 1 billion coming from gold in Kakamega should be accounted for and remain within the community and the hustlers.
