Kahiga Secures Regional Leadership Role as EALGA Chair

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has been elected chairperson of the East African County and Local Governments Association (EACLGA) for the 2026-2028 term.

The new was confirmed by Nyeri County who congratulated him on his achievement.

“We would like to extend our heartiest congratulations to our Governor H.E. Dr Mwalimu Mutahi Kahiga, PhD, EGH, on his historic election as Chairperson of the East African Local Governments Association,” read a statement by the Nyeri County Government.

According to reports, Kahiga succeeds Wilson Sanya, a former Mayor of Koboko Municipality in Uganda and president of the Urban Authorities Association of Uganda (UAAU).

Further reports indicate that the election was announced at the ninth East Africa Local Governments Forum Ministerial Meeting in Nairobi, where Kenya formally took over the chairship from Uganda.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi officially opened the forum and outlined Kenya’s five priorities for its new leadership role.

These included establishing closer links between local governments and the East African Community, advancing decentralisation and increasing financial independence for local authorities.

The agenda also seeks to increase public participation, particularly among women and young people, while improving institutional capacity through training and knowledge exchange.
