The Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced the suspension of the Migwani ward by-elections that were scheduled for November 17.
In a notice on Tuesday, October 27, 2027, the commission said the suspension followed interim conservatory orders by the High Court.
According to the IEBC, an update on the election will be communicated at a later date as the matter is still actively before the court.
“The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) hereby informs the general public that the by-election for Migwani Ward, Mwingi West Constituency, Kitui County, has been suspended following interim conservatory orders issued by the High Court on October 22, 2026,” IEBC stated.
The comes after the High Court in Kitui issued interim orders suspending the by-election, pending the hearing and determination of a petition before it.
The petition was filed by Francis Musili Kauta, a civil society activist and politician eyeing the Kitui County gubernatorial seat in 2027.
In his petition, Kauta questioned the manner in which the Migwani seat fell vacant.
The court therefore ordered the suspension of the November 17 by-election for 30 days, with the matter set to be heard on November 11.
