A Multi-Agency security team has recovered 48 rounds of AK-47 ammunition concealed inside pieces of meat aboard a passenger bus in Kanyonyoo, Kitui County.
The ammunition was intercepted during a routine security operation along the Thika–Garissa Highway after officers stopped a Zafanana Coach bus operated by Northern Cruz Sacco.
The bus was travelling from Dadaab to Nairobi when the security team conducted a search and discovered a blue woven carrier bag in the overhead luggage rack serving seats 23, 24 and 25.

A closer inspection of the contents revealed pieces of meat concealing a black nylon package containing 48 rounds of 7.62×39mm ammunition, commonly used in AK-47 rifles.
The discovery prompted the arrest of the bus driver, Samuel Ngui Munyithya, and turnboy Justus Muatha Kiola.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the two could not account for the consignment or identify its owner.
The suspects were taken to Kanyonyoo Police Station, where they remain in custody as detectives investigate the source of the ammunition and establish its intended destination.
The bus has also been detained, while the recovered ammunition has been secured as an exhibit as investigations continue.
