President William Ruto has been elected as the new Chairperson of the East Africa Community (EAC), taking over from South Sudan President Salva Kiir.
The announcement comes after an election was conducted by the Heads of State from seven member countries, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, and Somalia.
President Ruto’s appointment comes amidst the ongoing 24 EAC Heads of State Summit in Arusha, Tanzania.

The summit began on Friday, November 29, and ends today.
The summit was to bring together regional leaders to address key challenges facing the EAC and discuss strategies to accelerate economic integration, strengthen the region’s resilience to climate change, and address insecurity.
During a press release on Friday, the state house spokesperson disclosed the president was also to champion boosting trade security and innovation at the summit.
