Kenyan sprinter Ferdinand Omanyala has ended his 2026 athletics season early after suffering a stress fracture in the heel bone of his left foot.
The African 100m record holder confirmed the injury on Tuesday, September 1, ruling him out of his final two scheduled competitions of the season the Diamond League Final in Brussels and the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest.
Omanyala had qualified for the Diamond League Final after a strong campaign in the 2026 series, where he was among the athletes who secured a place in the men’s 100m final.
The injury is a setback for the Kenyan sprinter, who had been expected to compete in Brussels on September 4 and 5 before turning his attention to the World Athletics Ultimate Championship, scheduled for September 11 to 13 in Budapest.
The 30-year-old had also been targeting the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow earlier in the season, where he was seeking to defend his men’s 100m title. He had won the 100m at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Omanyala’s withdrawal means he will now focus on recovering from the heel injury rather than competing during the final stage of the athletics season.
The Kenyan holds the African men’s 100m record of 9.77 seconds, which he set in Nairobi in 2021.
His early exit brings an unexpected end to a 2026 campaign in which he had remained one of Kenya’s leading sprint representatives on the international circuit.
Omanyala will now turn his attention to rehabilitation as he looks ahead to the next athletics season.
