Kenya and Brazil are set to deepen cooperation in the energy sector after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Brazil’s Chamber of Electric Energy Commercialization (CCEE).
In a statement issued on Monday, August 24, EPRA noted that the agreement will facilitate cooperation and knowledge exchange between the two institutions, particularly in capacity development.
The agreement was signed in São Paulo by EPRA Acting Director General Joseph Oketch and CCEE Chief Executive Officer Ricardo Simabuku.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by the Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Kenya in Brasília, Ambassador Peris Kariuki, and EPRA Chairman Mwambu Mabonga.
The partnership comes as Kenya advances the implementation of its Open Access and Electricity Market Regulations, with EPRA seeking to strengthen the country’s evolving electricity market framework.
EPRA stated Brazil’s experience in competitive electricity markets will provide valuable lessons for Kenya as it works to develop its electricity sector.
Oketch noted that international cooperation and knowledge exchange would play a key role in enhancing EPRA’s institutional capacity and supporting the development of Kenya’s energy sector.
The partnership is expected to create opportunities for both institutions to share expertise and strengthen regulatory and market development practices in the energy sector.
