Chelsea began the 2026/27 Premier League campaign with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Monday night, giving new manager Xabi Alonso a winning start in his first competitive match in charge.
Chelsea made a flying start when Joao Pedro opened the scoring after just 32 seconds. The Brazilian forward was played through by Cole Palmer before calmly finishing to put the visitors ahead almost immediately after kick-off.
Fulham responded strongly and found an equaliser through Josh King, restoring parity before Chelsea regained control of the contest.
Chelsea restored their advantage when summer signing Morgan Rogers scored on his competitive debut for the club. Rogers finished after being set up by defender Maxence Lacroix, giving Alonso’s side a 2-1 lead.
Palmer then added Chelsea’s third goal, capping an influential performance in the London derby. The England international had already contributed to the opening goal before getting on the scoresheet himself.
Fulham refused to surrender and pulled another goal back through Gonzalo Garcia, setting up a tense closing period at Craven Cottage. The hosts pushed for an equaliser but Chelsea held on to secure all three points.
The victory gives Alonso an encouraging start to his Chelsea tenure after the Spaniard took over ahead of the new campaign.
It was also a positive opening for Fulham’s new manager Álvaro Arbeloa, despite his side ending the night without a point.
Chelsea’s attacking display will provide Alonso with plenty of encouragement, although the two goals conceded will also highlight areas that need improvement as the season progresses.
The result sees Chelsea begin their Premier League campaign with three points, while Fulham will look to respond in their next fixture.
