Parliament Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has doubled down on his stance against Members of Parliament wearing colours perceived as party colours or coordinated party “uniforms”.
The National Assembly Speaker issued the warning on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, after a section of MPs allied to the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) turned up in Parliament wearing matching green suits, prompting questions over whether the attire amounted to party colours.
According to Wetang’ula MPs are free to wear different colours in the House, but the situation would be different if the attire was deemed to represent a political party.
“I am not aware that the colours the members are wearing are party colours. If the Speaker will be subsequently convinced that what you are wearing are party colours, then we will tell you you are out of order,” he said.
Additionally, the speaker directed that, except during special occasions, the parliament would not entertain what he described as party uniforms.
“From today onwards, unless it is a special occasion, we do not entertain party uniforms in the House,” he added.
Wetang’ula maintained that MPs could wear any colour of their choice but warned that coordinated attire associated with a political party could attract disciplinary action.
“It is possible that members can wear any colour in the House, but the moment you turn it to party colours, you will be ruled out of order,” he further said.
