National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula was forced to restore order in the House after DCP-affiliated Members of Parliament broke into celebrations during the swearing-in of newly elected Ol Kalou MP Sammy Douglas Waweru on Tuesday, July 28.
The excitement began as Waweru entered the National Assembly chamber accompanied by Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia.
Lawmakers allied to the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), many dressed in the party’s signature green attire, erupted into cheers before the swearing-in ceremony had officially begun.

Wetang’ula briefly halted the proceedings and directed members to observe parliamentary decorum, reminding them that celebrations were only permitted after the oath had been administered and not on the floor of the House.
The Speaker also addressed a breach involving DCP-allied senators who had attended the ceremony.
One senator was found occupying the seat reserved for Deputy President Kithure Kindiki in the Speaker’s Gallery, prompting Wetang’ula to instruct the Sergeant-at-Arms to enforce House rules and have the seat vacated.
After order was restored, Waweru took the oath of office, signed the official register, and was presented with key parliamentary documents, including a copy of the Constitution of Kenya, formally marking the beginning of his tenure as the Ol Kalou Member of Parliament.
Earlier in the day, the legislator attracted public attention after travelling to Parliament aboard a public service matatu instead of using official transport.
Photos shared on his social media accounts showed him commuting alongside ordinary passengers ahead of the swearing-in ceremony.
Waweru’s entry into Parliament comes nearly two weeks after he won the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election held on July 16 on the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) ticket.
He secured a landslide victory with 35,440 votes, defeating United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah, who garnered 5,450 votes, to earn the mandate to represent Ol Kalou Constituency in the National Assembly.
