The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has charged a Principal Probation Officer with soliciting a bribe in exchange for allegedly influencing the outcome of a criminal case before a court in Murang’a County.
Principal Probation Officer Julius Irungu Njogu was arraigned before the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court on Tuesday, where he faced one count of requesting a financial advantage contrary to the Anti-Bribery Act.
According to the prosecution, Njogu allegedly demanded KSh170,000 from Peter Njihia Njuguna on July 16, 2026, while serving at the Kangema Law Courts in Murang’a County.

The prosecution told the court that the money was allegedly sought on behalf of Senior Principal Magistrate Martin Kinyua Mutegi in exchange for securing a favourable sentence in a criminal matter pending before the Kangema Chief Magistrate’s Court.
Njogu denied the charge when he appeared before the court and pleaded not guilty.
The court released him on a cash bail of KSh400,000 or an alternative bond of KSh800,000 pending the hearing and determination of the case.
His co-accused, Senior Principal Magistrate Martin Kinyua Mutegi, did not take plea after failing to appear in court. Through his advocate, the magistrate informed the court that he was unwell.
The court directed Mutegi to appear before the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court on Thursday, July 30, 2026, for plea taking.
The case is part of ongoing efforts by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and anti-corruption agencies to crack down on bribery and abuse of office within the public service and the justice sector.
