Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has challenged his players to remain grounded despite their emphatic 5-0 victory over APR FC, warning that the result will count for little if K’Ogalo fail to maintain the same intensity in the remaining matches of the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup.
The Kenyan champions made a dream start to their Group A campaign on Friday night, dismantling Rwandan giants APR FC at Amahoro Stadium in one of the tournament’s biggest results.
Captain Mike Kibwage opened the scoring before Patrick Essombe, Alpha Onyango, Benson Omala and Austin Odhiambo added the other goals to seal a commanding win.
While pleased with the performance, Akonnor insisted the victory should not distract his team from the task ahead, stressing that every match in the tournament presents a different challenge.
“We have to forget this result and focus on the next game. Vipers are a completely different team, and we must prepare differently if we want another positive result,” Akonnor said ahead of Monday’s clash against Uganda’s Vipers SC.
The Ghanaian tactician praised his players for executing the team’s tactical plan effectively and admitted he had not expected such a polished display considering he has only had a short time to work with the squad. He also singled out the club’s new signings for adapting quickly and making a positive impact in the opening match.
Akonnor, however, believes Gor Mahia still have areas to improve, particularly in maintaining concentration throughout matches and building consistency as they pursue the regional title. The former Ghana national team coach noted that the tournament provides an important opportunity for the squad to build chemistry ahead of the new domestic season and future continental assignments.
Gor Mahia now turn their attention to a crucial Group A encounter against Vipers SC of Uganda on Monday. A victory would significantly strengthen K’Ogalo’s chances of progressing to the knockout stages and reinforce their status as one of the favourites to lift this year’s CECAFA Kagame Cup.
