President William Ruto has named former Bumula Member of Parliament Moses Wekesa Mwambu Mabonga as the new Chairperson of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).
The appointment was announced through a gazette notice dated July 24, 2026, and takes effect immediately.
Former MP Mabonga is set to serve a three-year term at the helm of the energy sector regulator.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 12(1)(a) of the Energy Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of Kenya and Commander in Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Moses Wekesa Mabonga,” part of the notice read.
Following the appointment, Mabonga is expected to oversee EPRA’s board, which is responsible for providing strategic direction and governance to the Authority.
This comes after the resignation of the former Director General Daniel Kiptoo who resigned in April following his arrest and detention over the fuel importation saga.
Following Kiptoo’s resignation, Ruto appointed Engineer Joseph Oketch as the Acting Director General to steer the regulator as investigations and reforms within the energy sector continued.
