DCI Rolls Out Bomb Technician Training to Strengthen Security

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched a specialised bomb technician training course.

This will target officers who respond to explosive threats across the country.

The seven-week Explosive Incident Countermeasures Course kicked off at the Border Police College in Kanyonyo on July 6, bringing together elite officers from different security units.

According to reports, participants were drawn from the Bomb Disposal Unit and the Administration Police Special Operations Group, both tasked with handling the country’s most dangerous explosive incidents.

“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has today launched the Explosive Incident Countermeasures Course at the Border Police College, Kanyonyo, marking another significant milestone in strengthening Kenya’s preparedness and response to explosive-related threats,” the DCI stated.

The training covers the fundamentals of explosives, improvised explosive devices, and military ordnance, giving the trainee officers a solid technical grounding before moving to hands-on skills.

Trainees will also learn render-safe procedures, which involve safely disarming or neutralising explosive devices without triggering detonation or endangering nearby communities.

In addition, the course will also teach proper transportation and storage of explosives, ensuring officers handle dangerous materials safely from recovery through to disposal.

Once they complete the intensive programme, the officers will graduate as certified Basic Bomb Technicians, ready to deploy wherever explosive threats emerge nationwide.

The course was reportedly officially opened on behalf of DCI Director Mohamed Amin by Director of Personnel Rosemary Kuraru, with US Embassy officials also in attendance.

The U.S. funded the training through its Anti-Terrorism Assistance Programme, coming from the long-standing security partnership between Kenya and the United States.
