Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has dismissed President William Ruto’s claim that he single-handedly won the support of the Mount Kenya region, arguing that former President Uhuru Kenyatta played a key role in introducing him to voters there.
Speaking on Monday, July 6, Gachagua said Ruto’s rise in the region was made possible by Uhuru’s endorsement before the 2022 General Election.
He claimed that although Ruto later built his own political support, it was based on promises that have since disappointed residents.

Gachagua further argued that he helped restore Ruto’s image in the region after Uhuru cautioned voters against supporting him, saying his efforts were instrumental in securing Ruto’s victory in 2022.
He accused the President of misleading Mount Kenya residents during the 2022 campaigns and claimed voters have since become more cautious about political promises.
According to Gachagua, residents are now evaluating leaders based on their actions rather than campaign rhetoric.
The DCP leader further alleged that the President had betrayed the trust of the region by failing to fulfil key promises made during the election campaign.
He maintained that this had significantly eroded Ruto’s support in the vote-rich region.
Gachagua also vowed to lead efforts to ensure President Ruto does not secure a second term in the 2027 General Election, insisting that the region had already made up its mind ahead of the polls.
He added that the United Democratic Alliance’s victories in recent by-elections in the Mount Kenya region should not be interpreted as a sign that the President will enjoy similar success in the 2027 General Election, arguing that local by-elections and a presidential contest are different political contests.
