Brazil booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 after Gabriel Martinelli scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to hand the five-time world champions a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Japan in their final Group Stage match on Monday.
The South Americans were forced to dig deep after falling behind in the first half, but second-half goals from Casemiro and Martinelli completed a spirited comeback that ensured Brazil progressed to the knockout rounds.
The victory also maintained Brazil’s unbeaten record in the group stage as they continue their pursuit of a record-extending sixth World Cup title.

Japan made an impressive start and stunned the Brazilian defence in the 29th minute when Shuto Sano fired his side into the lead. The goal capped a bright opening spell from the Blue Samurai, who pressed aggressively and frustrated Brazil’s attack with disciplined defending and quick transitions.
Despite enjoying the majority of possession before the break, Brazil struggled to create clear-cut chances as Japan held onto their slender advantage going into halftime. Manager Carlo Ancelotti responded by urging his side to increase the tempo after the restart, and Brazil returned with renewed determination.
Their pressure finally paid off in the 56th minute when experienced midfielder Casemiro rose highest to convert from close range following a well-delivered set-piece, bringing Brazil level and shifting the momentum firmly in their favour.
Brazil continued to dominate possession and pinned Japan deep inside their own half during the closing stages. Japan defended bravely and looked set to secure a valuable draw before heartbreak struck in stoppage time.
In the fifth minute of added time, Gabriel Martinelli produced the decisive moment, calmly finishing from inside the penalty area after a flowing attacking move to complete Brazil’s comeback and spark wild celebrations among the Brazilian players and supporters.
The victory confirmed Brazil’s place in the Round of 32, underlining the team’s resilience after recovering from an early setback. Casemiro’s leadership in midfield and Martinelli’s late heroics proved decisive as Brazil once again demonstrated their ability to deliver under pressure.
For Japan, the defeat was a bitter disappointment after an excellent defensive display for much of the contest. Although they matched Brazil for long periods and came close to earning a valuable point, they were ultimately undone by the South Americans’ relentless pressure in the closing minutes.
Brazil will now shift their focus to the knockout stage, where they will aim to build on another determined performance as one of the tournament favourites, while Japan await confirmation of their fate depending on the final standings and results elsewhere.
