The Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to all shipping companies operating in the country, requiring them to comply with the Merchant Shipping Regulations.
The directive, issued on Monday, June 22, applies to both local and foreign shipping lines operating within Kenyan waters and ports.
KMA said all foreign shipping companies are required to obtain a Registration Certificate, while local operators must secure a valid operating licence issued by the authority in line with the Merchant Shipping (Maritime Transport Operators) Regulations, 2024.

The authority said the move is aimed at ensuring full compliance with laws governing maritime transport operations in Kenya and strengthening regulation of the sector.
KMA warned that any shipping line found operating without the required documentation will face enforcement action and other sanctions as provided under the law.
The authority further directed all affected operators to regularise their registration and licensing status within seven days, failure to which they will be subjected to penalties under the applicable regulations and maritime laws.
