Police Raid Bungoma Crime Ring Linked to Phone Theft and Hacking

The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed the dismantling of a suspected mobile phone theft and hacking syndicate operating in Bungoma County following an intelligence-led operation that led to the arrest of two suspects.

According to NPS, officers from Bungoma South Sub-County, working jointly with M-KOPA Kenya Limited, tracked down and apprehended the two individuals in Bungoma Town.

The suspects are believed to have been under surveillance since 2025 due to their alleged involvement in a coordinated network linked to multiple incidents of phone theft and cyber-related crime across Sang’alo and Bungoma Township.

Investigations indicate that the syndicate had been operating in a structured manner, targeting unsuspecting members of the public, which prompted numerous complaints from victims in the region.

During the operation, police recovered a significant cache of suspected stolen items and equipment used in cybercrime activities.

These included 38 M-KOPA HMD mobile phones, 53 assorted mobile phones of various makes, and five specialised flashing tools allegedly used to unlock, alter, and manipulate mobile phone operating systems.

The two suspects are currently in police custody as they await processing and subsequent arraignment in court.

All recovered items have been secured as exhibits to support ongoing investigations.
