New Military Shake-Up as Ruto Promotes Senior KDF Officers

President William Ruto has announced a series of changes within the Kenya Defence Forces, including new promotions, appointments, and reassignments across the Army, Air Force, and Navy.

In the latest reshuffle dated Friday, June 5, Brigadier Peter Kipketer Limo was promoted to the rank of Major General and appointed Assistant Chief of Defence Forces in charge of Personnel and Logistics at Defence Headquarters. 

He takes over the role previously held by Major General Edward Rugendo, who has now been appointed Managing Director of the Defence Forces Welfare Services.

In further changes, Major General John Maiso Nkoimo has been appointed Deputy Commander of the Kenya Army following the retirement of Major General Mohamed Nur Hassan. Before his appointment, Nkoimo served as the General Officer Commanding Central Command.

In the Kenya Air Force, Brigadier Mohamud Salah Farah, formerly Base Commander at Laikipia Air Base, has been appointed Deputy Air Force Commander. 

Additionally, Brigadier William Kamoiro has been promoted to Major General and assigned as General Officer Commanding Central Command.

The President also extended the tenure of Major General Paul Owuor Otieno, the Commander of the Kenya Navy, for an additional one year, acting on recommendations from the Defence Council chaired by Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya.

Further promotions included Brigadier Francis Njoroge Kuria, who was elevated to Major General and appointed Director of Medical Services.

At the Kenya Army Headquarters, Colonel Mark Joseph Awala and Colonel Makonani Balata were promoted to Brigadier, taking up roles as Chief of Operations and Commander of Lang’ata Garrison respectively.

Colonel Asma Diramo Kofa was also promoted to Brigadier and appointed Chief of Provost at the Directorate of Oversight, Compliance and Accountability.

In the Kenya Air Force, Colonel Peter Karigih Kariuki and Colonel Margaret Kikechi were promoted to Brigadier, while Lieutenant Colonel Bernadette Awar Eyanae was elevated to Colonel. 

Brigadier Kariuki will serve as College Secretary at the National Defence College, while Brigadier Kikechi takes up the role of Chief of Research and Development at the National Defence Security Industries. 

Colonel Eyanae has been appointed Colonel Plans and Programmes at the International Peace Support Training Centre.
