Fire Breaks Out at Tarakwo High School as School Blaze Cases Rise

A fire broke out at Tarakwo High School in Bomet County on the night of Monday, June 1, adding to a growing list of school fire incidents reported across the country in recent months.

The Kenya Red Cross confirmed the incident on Tuesday, June 2, noting that it was the fifth school fire recorded since the tragic blaze at Utumishi Girls Academy.

The organization also revealed that it has responded to 37 school fire incidents in different counties since the beginning of the year.

No injuries or fatalities were reported in the Tarakwo High School fire. However, emergency responders emphasized the need for schools to strengthen fire prevention measures and improve safety preparedness.

Kenya Red Cross teams were deployed to the school to assess the situation and provide support where necessary.

Meanwhile, students at Lenana School have been sent home indefinitely following unrest that erupted at the institution during evening prep sessions.

In a communication to parents and guardians, the school administration announced the temporary closure, saying the move was necessary to allow investigations into the disturbances and restore order within the school.

Parents were directed to collect their children from the school on Tuesday morning, with the administration insisting that students could only leave the institution in the company of a parent, guardian, or authorized representative.

The school has yet to indicate when learning will resume, stating that further communication will be issued once assessments are completed and new arrangements are put in place.
