Arsenal’s long awaited quest for European glory ended in heartbreak on Saturday night after they were defeated by Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League final at Budapest’s Puskás Aréna.
The Gunners came agonizingly close to lifting their first ever Champions League trophy but ultimately fell 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw across regulation and extra time.
Mikel Arteta’s side made a bright start and were rewarded in the first half when Kai Havertz fired Arsenal into the lead, sending thousands of travelling supporters into celebration. However, the advantage was short-lived as PSG star Ousmane Dembélé struck back to level the contest and keep the French champions in the game.
Despite several chances for both teams, neither side could find a winner in normal time or during extra time, forcing the biggest match in European club football to be settled from the penalty spot.

The shootout proved cruel for Arsenal. After a tense exchange of penalties, defender Gabriel saw his decisive spot-kick fail, handing PSG a 4-3 victory and sparking wild celebrations among the French side.
The result secured back-to-back Champions League titles for PSG while extending Arsenal’s wait for European football’s most prestigious trophy.
The defeat will be particularly painful for Arsenal, who had arrived in Budapest full of confidence after ending a 22-year wait for the Premier League title and producing an impressive unbeaten run through much of the Champions League campaign.
For Arteta and his players, the loss is a bitter reminder of how fine the margins can be at the highest level. Yet despite the disappointment, Arsenal’s remarkable season has re-established them among Europe’s elite and offered supporters hope that their first Champions League crown may only be a matter of time.
