Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has criticized President William Ruto over the proposed establishment of a US-backed Ebola quarantine facility in Kenya, accusing the government of putting citizens at risk.
In a statement, Gachagua noted that the move exposed Kenyans to unnecessary danger at a time when other countries were strengthening protections against health pandemics.
He also questioned the government’s priorities, framing the decision as reckless and irresponsible.

The DCP leader further praised Kenyans and health professionals for raising concerns over the proposed project, saying citizens would not accept policies that endanger public safety amid broader allegations of mismanagement and corruption within government systems.
His remarks came shortly after the High Court issued conservatory orders blocking the establishment of any Ebola quarantine, isolation, or treatment facility linked to arrangements with the United States or any foreign agency.
The orders were issued by Justice Patricia Nyaundi following a petition filed by the Katiba Institute.
The court also restrained the government from allowing entry of individuals exposed to or infected with Ebola under such arrangements.
The matter is set for mention on June 2, 2026.
The ruling follows recent discussions between President Ruto and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the Ebola outbreak, during which the US government reportedly indicated plans to commit Ksh1.74 billion ($13.5 million) toward Kenya’s Ebola preparedness efforts.
