Iraq’s Government has advanced to a closure of amending a law allowing girls as young as 9 years old to get married.
This will lower the age of consent from 18 to 9.
According to New York post, the Shia Conservative group that dominates Iraq’s parliament proposed an amendment to the country’s “personal status law” that could see a Taliban-style rollback of all women’s rights.

This is a catastrophe for women. This law legalizes child rape.
Faiq told the guardian.
Faiq, among other female Iraqi representatives who were against the bill said that the chance would allow married off and put nearly all family decisions in the hands of religious authorities.
The religious groups hold a large majority in parliament, this will create an uphill battle for Faiq and a group of 25 female representatives who are seeking to stop a second vote that would ratify the bill.
Unfortunately, male MPs who support this law speak in a masculine way, asking, ‘What’s wrong with marrying a minor? Their thinking is narrow minded.
Alia Nassif, an Iraq representative told the guardian.
According to New York post, if the law passes, it will remove women’s right to divorce, child custody and inheritance yet the Shia coalition said repeatedly that the point of law is to protect girls from ‘immoral relationships’.
